Don’t forget your county door prizes!!! As usual we are asking each county to bring a door prize, some- thing representative of your county, to the meeting. We’ll distribute the prizes at the “Sail Away

Deck Party” Door prize Dinner/Dance on Monday evening. Don’t forget to put your county’s name on the package so that the winner of that prize will know where it came from! This has been such a fun and interesting process — the ideas are always great! Come decked out to the party! Wear your Hawaiian or cruise attire! Get out those loud flowered shirts and dresses, we are going to be sailing the night away on the USS WV Commissioner!!!

County Commissioners & Administrators should remember to bring your permanent name tags with you to the meeting. If you don’t have one, give us a call and we’ll get you one. If you have questions or need further information, please feel free to call. You may reach me at 345-4639. We are looking forward to a great meeting.

Celebrating a Legacy of Women in Public Service - Award Winner

Nancy Cartmill received the "Mrs. Anna Johnson Gate Award" for Government. When talking about government, Nancy Cartmill’s name always seems to come up. Nancy was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1972. She was appointed by Senator Rockefeller to serve on the implementation team for the National Commission on Children’s Report.

The staff of CCAWV joins with fellow Commissioners from across the state in mourning the loss of former Wayne County Commissioner, Jim Booton. He was a former President and Board Member of the County Commissioners Association. He was a true friend to the Commissioners’ Association and will be greatly missed by all of us.

An Initiative to Raise Awareness and Understanding of Counties

County Government Works is an initiative to make the American public, who are beneficiaries of government services, and officials at other levels of government, who are partners in delivering those services, more knowledgeable and positive about the contributions of county government.  County officials and NACo must tell the story about the effectiveness of county government and how County Government Works every day. This initiative has put in place the tools for county officials to use to ensure that the story is told well and told often.

NEW - Online Game - Counties Work

NACo, together with iCivics, has created an online game, "Counties Work," to educate students, grades 6 through 12, about the important role and functions of county government by letting them run their own county. A curriculum and web quest has also been developed to assist teachers with preparing lessons on county government.
